National Day of Prayer – May 7, 2026

By Hal Mitchell

If ever there were a time to pray for America, it is now. I’m sure the Founding Fathers felt the same way in 1776. “Some things never change!” they say.

There have been three important covenants made in the early days of America’s founding. The first one was cut while the Pilgrims were still on the Mayflower on Nov. 11, 1620 in Cape Cod.

Here is the prayer by their leader, William Bradford:Being thus arrived in a good harbor, and brought safe to land, they fell upon their knees and blessed the God of Heaven, who had brought them over the vast, and furious ocean, and delivered them from all the perils, and miseries thereof; again to set their feet on the firm and stable earth, their proper element.”
William Bradford, Of Plimoth Plantation.

The second covenant and the Prayer by Robert Hunt on Apr. 26,1607

We do hereby dedicate this Land, and ourselves, to reach the People within these shores with the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and to raise up Godly generations after us, and with these generations take the Kingdom of God to all the earth. May this Covenant of Dedication remain to all generations, as long as this earth remains and may this land, along with England, be evangelists to the world. May all who see this cross remember what we have done here, and may those who come here to inhabit join us in this Covenant and this most noble work, that the Holy Scriptures may be fulfilled. From these very shores the gospel shall go forth, not only to this new world, but the entire world.”

The third Covenant was cut by George Washington’ See below:

George Washington’s prayer at St. Paul’s Chapel on April 30, 1789, was a moment of profound significance in the history of the United States. After taking the oath of office, Washington led a solemn procession to the chapel, where he knelt in prayer. This act symbolized the dedication of the fledgling republic to Almighty God, emphasizing the importance of virtue and faith in the nation’s foundation. Washington’s prayer at St. Paul’s Chapel.

Here is his prayer from Jeremiah 30:22 – And ye shall be my people, and I will be your God.
