The shooter was among roughly 90,000 Afghans allowed entry into the US under the Biden administration’s Operation Allies Welcome (OAW) and Operation Allies Refuge (OAR) programs, which provided the foreign nationals immigration processing and resettlement support.
The majority of those Afghan refugees, about 73,500, were granted a two-year parole by the Biden administration – and some later received a two-year extension of their initial temporary immigration status – allowing them to legally live and work in the US.
The Virginia National Guard member, Sarah Beckstrom, has died and another is in critical condition after a gunman opened fire near the White House the day before Thanksgiving, in an attack that has added fuel to President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown.
US Army Spc. Sarah Beckstrom, 20, had been in the service for just over two years when she was shot and killed in the nation’s capital, the president said in a call to service members on Thanksgiving. He described the young soldier who volunteered to work over the holiday as “outstanding in every way.” The other one is fighting for his life. One enforcement source said the suspect is a 29-year-old Afghan refugee, Rahamanullah Lakanwal, who entered the US in September 2021 under one of Biden’s refugee programs.
