Trump Signs Bill to Fund the Gov

President Trump formally brought the longest government shutdown in history to an end on Wednesday night when he signed a funding bill to reopen the government, which had been shuttered for a record-setting 43 days.

The bill was passed by the House of Representatives earlier Wednesday night in a largely party-line vote that followed hours of contentious debate. But the breakthrough that allowed the standoff to finally be resolved came on Monday in the Senate, where seven Democrats and one Democratic-leaning independent opted to help Republicans overcome the filibuster and send the legislation to the House.

The bill will keep the government open until at least Jan. 30 and extends funding for certain key programs, including food stamps and veterans benefits, through the end of Sept.

In the end, Democrats were unable to convince the GOP to extend subsidies for the Affordable Care Act, which had been their primary demand throughout the shutdown. Instead, Republican leaders in the Senate have pledged to allow a vote on those subsidies in the near future. Democrats are also planning to mount an effort to force a similar vote in the House.

The shutdown surpassed the previous record of 35 days set during Trump’s first presidential term. The longest shutdown to happen under any other president was 21 days.
